Oh, the irritating stories I could tell of how light skin is prized here...
- Walking down the street with my mixed-race boxer buddies, the masseuses will scream and holler to the light ones "come in, come in!"-- then abruptly shut up as the darker ones pass
- On the beach, vendors go to the following lengths to protect their skin from sun darkening: long sleeve shirt and pants, bandit-style face mask, giant hat, and a huge scarf swathing their neck, chin, and upper face.
- A sizable amount of darker-skinned women in sunny towns will wear thick, caked white makeup to lighten their face. Doesn't look too realistic.
Ahhh, why can't we all just love all our colors! That goes for you, too, topless European sun-worshiper. :)

Haha. Can Boston Bright graduates still zip their Thai skin back on? I hope so. We're having Thai food at our biweekly hangout this week in honor of your being in Thailand!
ReplyDeleteIn the movie Full Metal Jacket the US Marine drill sergeant states, "Inside every gook there's an American trying to get out."
ReplyDeleteThe above statement is in no way a reflection of the beliefs of this writer. However, that billboard sure does seem to embody what that drill sergeant believed!
